Barry’s Bristol Ball Buster is a 200 kilometre Brevet de Randonneur organised by LVIS under Audax rules.

LVIS is an organisation dedicated to the pursuit of sporting excellence, without the unfortunate level of seriousness that seems to infect so many other sporting societies.

Two different days on Dartmoor

In the summer we are planning to walk the Tour of Mont Blanc. This is an excursion of some 170km with 10,000m of ascent. With this in mind we thought a couple of days on Dartmoor would be a start to our preparation. We diligently checked the weather forecast in the preceding days and, confident that we could expect a couple of dry, chilly days with good visibility, we drove down to Postbridge on Wednesday 26th March.

The Grizzly 2014 ‘Withering Heights’

The Grizzly is an annual event organised by Axe Valley Runners and has happened every March since 1988. It is very popular and is always over subscribed. The Grizzly is twentyish muddy, hilly, boggy, beachy miles of the multiest-terrain running experience. There is also a shorter race called the Grizzly Cub which starts at the same time as the Grizzly. The race starts and finishes at Seaton in East Devon and follows a very hilly route.

I have run the Grizzly many times before. It is always a very hard race. In the days when I was a proper runner, training 30+ miles a week, I would usually be running the London Marathon in a few weeks after the Grizzly, so I would be quite fit. Now that I am more of a cyclist than a runner I had done very little preparation for this year’s Grizzly and haven’t run a race since the Middle Distance Triathlon last June. So it was with some trepidation that I lined up at the start with one of my daughters, who is a runner!

The Mad March Coast and Quantocks 200km is an Audax Calendar Event run by Pippa & Robin Wheeler of Exeter Wheelers. The event starts at the Barn Owl in Exeter.

The weather forecast wasn’t good.  A damp start with strong winds becoming wetter and wetter as the day went on.  It was accurate!
