Today’s ride made progress South by 100 km from Monetier-les-Bains to Jausiers in the Alpe Haute Provence. It was another lovely day as we prepared to leave Monetier.
There was the usual pre-roll faff as nervous adjustments were made to bicycles.
The peloton rode together along the D1091 to Briancon. When we stopped to muster at a roundabout in Briancon, my Garmin gave an average of 37kph for this 14k slightly downhill ride.
At this point the group split. Some went up and over the HC Col d’Izoard 2360m and some of us took a less strenuous option along the valley. There were great views on both routes.
Lunch was at Guillestre and after that it was straight into the 20km ascent of HC Col de Var 2109m.
The road gives access to skiing areas and there were a lot of people up there enjoying the beautiful weather and fine Alpine scenery.
As with all the other cols the grade varies: sometimes it is relentlessly steep and on this hill sometimes it even lost elevation.
It takes a while to tick off the kilometres
But eventually you get there.
It was still quite warm at the top and we sat in deck chairs and had ice cream.
The descent was long, with many hairpins, but with beautiful scenery. There were a few tunnels to go through as we made our way down the mountain.
Tonight we’re at the Sans Souci Hotel -,no worries!
Tomorrow first up is the highest paved road in Europe the HC Col de Bonnette 2860m.
